Australian Shepherds began with the purchase of Carowind's Chessman,
"Chess" in the spring of 1988. Chess was purchased from Carol Millsaps
of Statesville, NC. Chess was a 2 year old black tri, by CH.
Briarbrook's Bishop of Wyndridge, STDscd, CD out of Pretty Hot of
Arrowhead. We were looking to buy a Aussie pup and looked at several
young puppies. Carol suggested that we come to her house to look at
Chess, to see if we might be interested in an older dog. After seeing
Chess our minds were made up that we would take him and give him a good
home. Chess was our constant traveling companion, he went with us to
numerous Farm Auctions and Cattle Sales.
suggested that we might want to go to some ASCA shows and try our hand
at showing him in conformation. Well, we gave it a try in the late
summer of 1988, at BRASC(Blue Ridge Australian Shepherd Club) show in
Northern VA. Chess placed first in open black class and we were hooked.
We then began showing at all the BRASC shows in VA. Chess consistently
won the Open Black Class.
ASCA and BRASC in the Fall of 1988 and joined CASC(Carolina Australian
Shepherd Club) in 1990 and have been members of all three ever since.
We have also been members of MAASC(Mid-Atlantic Australian Shepherd
Club) off and on since 1990.
Winter of 1989, we bred Chess to Sugarbush's Moon Zapper and we took a
puppy as our stud fee. That puppy was Milwin's Bishop's Kardinal,
"Buzz" , who turned out to be one of the top show Aussies in the
Eastern part of the US. Buzz is the foundation dog of Cavalier
Australian Shepherds, he is either sire or grandsire of most of the
current members of the Cavalier family.
spring of 1989, we also acquired Milwin's Honeysuckle Rose, "Rose" . We
began showing in conformation with the boys and obedience and herding
with Rose. We titled Rose in obedience and herding in the fall of 1989,
competing a CD and STDc. The boys also began to do some winning in
conformation. In the fall of 1990, Buzz and Chess both finished their
CH titles with ASCA.
we began Specialing both of the boys and were rewarded with numerous
BOB wins and Buzz ended the year ranked in the Top Twenty Conformation
Dogs ASCA. Buzz also won a Best in Show at the ARBA show in Washington
D.C. in the spring of 1991. Buzz was bred to CH. Wyndridge Love is
Love, CD, in 1991 producing Cavalier's Belle of Brookridge, "Lucy", who
is the mother of several of our current Champions and majored pointed
we showed our dogs in conformation shows in VA, NC, GA, MD, TN and
Ohio; with Buzz ending the year ranked 10th in the National standings
ASCA. Lucy finished her CH as well at the tender age of 14 months. We
retired Chess from the ASCA show ring and began showing only Buzz and
Lucy in 1993, except for the new venue of AKC.
first AKC show in VA in Jan. 1993, we took our 3 dogs, Chess, Buzz, and
Lucy to compete. We had a wonderful day, with Chess going RWD, Lucy
going WB/BOS, and Buzz going WD/BOB and group 4. These three dogs all
finished their AKC CH within the first 4 months of AKC recognition. We
also bred Buzz to Davlin's Dancing Feather in 1993 producing Milwin
Cavalier's Radiance, "Claire" and Milwin Cavalier' Romance, "Winnie" .
Claire is also a mother of several of our other Champion young dogs.
continued to show mostly in Conformation every year since and have been
very successful finishing Championships (ASCA & AKC); winning
numerous BOB and BOS; and having dogs ranked in the Top Thirty ASCA
every year since 1991. We had 2 ranked in the Top Thirty in 96-97 and
97-98 in Buzz and Claire; and 2 ranked in the Top Thirty in 99-2000 in
ASCA/AKC CH. Cavalier's Born Out Back, "BOB" and ASCA/AKC CH.
Cavalier's Belle of the Ball, "Sheliah" .
done limited breedings during our 17 years in the breed, we have
produced 11 litters with a goal of "Performance thru Genetics". We
continue to strive only to breed the best and have been very selective
in the dogs we chose to use in our breeding program. Hopefully the
Cavalier bred dogs will continue to be among the top show dogs
